Home holds memories, independence, and comfort. When health challenges arise, families should not have to choose between safety and staying where they belong. With compassionate in home care, seniors can continue living in familiar surroundings while receiving the support they need. Executive Home Care of San Diego County is honored to help families protect what matters most.
Here’s one daughter’s account of her dad’s final years, and how in-home care played a vital role:
I’ll never forget the pain in my father’s eyes at the thought of leaving his home; one that he had built with his own hands forty years earlier. I knew how he felt about his piece of paradise; it was the place he had worked all of his life to achieve. He would never be ready to leave.
Knowing that he used his own hands to build this home, it would be the wrong of us to ask him to move, especially when his dementia was already robbing him of so much. We knew that the ultimate solution was to bring the care to him and not the other way around. We did our research and called several in-home caregiver services, but we were very impressed by one, Executive Home Care of San Diego County. I called and left a voicemail message, and a very nice person returned my call within a reasonable time, and after an easy-going and friendly conversation I knew that we wanted to know more about this company. We arranged to meet at a time that was convenient for dad and my siblings.
It was important to us (and to dad) that whoever came into our home understood the significance of this home. Due to his Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), he was not as effusive as he used to be, so I told them the family history. Our parents purchased the acreage from farmland back in the early 1970s but didn’t build it right away to be considerate of separating us kids from friends we grew up with. After we had left home, dad retired early and took the test to get his builder’s license and started to plan his dream home. Construction started in the mid-1980s with dad managing several skill-trade teams to build a multi-story home. He put his own sweat-equity into the structure by hand digging the basement footings. It took a year to finish the project, but when it was done…their home stood proudly with the sunrise in the kitchen, and sunset in the living room. Years later, he had a huge vegetable garden that kept him happily occupied outside. My parents had many pets who also enjoyed the freedom of living in the country.
He has lived longer than most of his friends, but his biggest fear is losing his freedom. With Executive Home Care of San Diego County, we don’t have to worry because they provide home care aids that meet his needs and provide daily interaction and stimulation to maintain his happiness. They also help with light housekeeping and food preparation so that he lives comfortably at home.
Still, we have the reminder that from his illness he is fearful of getting into the car because he worries that he’ll never return. He can’t help it. We have promised him that he doesn’t need to leave. Not when we have the help that we need from the staff at Executive Home Care of San Diego County, at home. We all live in peace knowing he never left home.
