“You Can’t Do It Alone” - Caring for an Elderly Parent Requires a Team Approach

Caring for an aging parent often means balancing emotional responsibility, professional demands, and the desire to help a loved one remain independent at home. For many families in North County San Diego, caregiving quickly becomes overwhelming without the right support, especially as care needs grow over time. Professional in-home care services allow seniors to continue aging in place while easing the daily responsibilities placed on family caregivers. In this blog, one family shares how Executive Home Care of North County San Diego became a trusted partner in their care journey, helping them manage day-to-day needs, preserve dignity, and maintain stability at home while continuing to thrive professionally.

How One Family Balanced Career, Caregiving, and Aging at Home

“If you had told me ten years ago that I would uproot my life on the East Coast and move to California to take care of my aging parents, I would not have believed you. But that’s exactly what happened,” said Sally in reflection after her mom had passed. It’s happening all over the country as many families knowingly take on the extra task of caring for an elderly parent, and they are also absorbing the extra cost of the day-to-day care. What they find out quickly is that they need a team to successfully manage it.

According to a 2023 research study by A Place For Mom, “nearly 17% of the U.S. adult population provides unpaid care to an adult over the age of 50. More than 75% of these caregivers are women, and on average they spend almost an equivalent number of hours a week providing care as people traditionally spend at a full-time job.” It quickly becomes clear that the work needs to be divided and managed by a team, even if it is not by all family members.

“Lucky for me, my job was home-based, and so I could easily be present while my parents remained as independent as possible. After one year, it was evident that I was not helping them enough, as their cognition was declining and my work product was lagging. That’s when my siblings urged me to find in-home help. We held a family meeting, did our research and called several in-home caregiver services,” said Sally.

“We chose Executive Home Care, (EHC) North County San Diego, adds Sally. “I called (760) 585-4898 and left a voicemail message, and a very nice person returned my call within a reasonable time, and after an easy-going and friendly conversation, we met with several possible caregivers and decided to work with a lady who lived close-by and, coincidentally, also went to the same doctor as my mom and dad. This was not her first time as a caregiver, and she described the work as ‘her passion’, so we knew she was a good fit for us.”

“Taking care of our elderly is both a privilege and a responsibility and my mom often told us that she gave birth to us and took care of us when we were children, so it was our turn to take care of her… and she was not about to move out of the house,” adds Sally. In the end, it all turned out for the best and both my mom and dad didn’t have to leave their home. Both had expressly told us that they didn’t want to go into a ‘nursing home' even though both knew that the senior living communities of today offer a lot more living choices than back in their day.”

"For five years, I was able to maintain strong business relationships and take 2-3 business trips a year while we had the in-home support of EHC caregivers. With Executive Home Care, North County San Diego, I didn’t worry because they provided for our needs and offered daily interaction and stimulation to maintain mom and dad’s happiness. They also helped with light housekeeping and mealtime prep, so that I could get my work done, and they could feel comfortable at the same time."
